A workmanlike thriller featuring an intrepid Afghanistan vet, a beautiful Cuban-American, and murky CIA shenanigans。

The first 40 chapters were literally all talk about what could go wrong with the proposed caper, then the heist gets cancelled, and the next 30 chapters were talk about all the things lost by abandoning the caper。 Then there was a shoot out。 The EndAlso, not sure why DeMille decided to introduce a "new" character when Daniel McCormick differs from John Corey in name only。 I'm done with this guy The first 40 chapters were literally all talk about what could go wrong with the proposed caper, then the heist gets cancelled, and the next 30 chapters were talk about all the things lost by abandoning the caper。 Then there was a shoot out。 The EndAlso, not sure why DeMille decided to introduce a "new" character when Daniel McCormick differs from John Corey in name only。 I'm done with this guy 。。。more

I liked the book! The areas of Cubs (tourist attractions, local bars, beaches) were interesting。 It was a little repetitive, always mentioning what he was called to do and the money he would get etc。

Les

Read like a slow romance novel。 Not typical of one of my favorite authors。

Andrew Otis

Not intellectually stimulating, but I suppose that's not why one would pick up this book! An interesting and at times unbelievable tale。 Often felt like I was reading a book made on an assembly line。 Not intellectually stimulating, but I suppose that's not why one would pick up this book! This is a solid DeMille adventure story that doesn't quite fulfill its promise。 The elements are their, including the exotic locale of police-state Cuba and a romance between a battle-scarred and somewhat cynical but actually idealistic guy and a mysterious woman, but the set-ups never quite deliver, and after the finish, feels ordinary。 Not a bad ride at all, but nothing particularly memorable, with too many of the subtle mysteries that were set up left unanswered。 This is a solid DeMille adventure story that doesn't quite fulfill its promise。 The elements are their, including the exotic locale of police-state Cuba and a romance between a battle-scarred and somewhat cynical but actually idealistic guy and a mysterious woman, but the set-ups never quite deliver, and after the finish, feels ordinary。 Not a bad ride at all, but nothing particularly memorable, with too many of the subtle mysteries that were set up left unanswered。 。。。more

Pretty goodI felt the author just doesn’t have the strong sense of word appeal that can turn books into page turners and notions into smiles。

Prior to reading this book, I thought I might like to visit Cuba on a holiday (vacation)。 But my impression of the country and the way its people have been treated was completely changed by this book。 Although the book is fiction, deMille does thorough research on his topics so I have to believe the picture he paints is accurate。 That said, I am very glad I read the book。 It was a good CIA/Spy type story, with the normal deMille level of twists and turns。

I enjoyed reading about Havana and the information about Cuba, Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the people。 The main character was interesting when he related his experiences in Afghanistan。 Too many horny men, too many lies from all the characters。 I finished the book because I wanted to see what happened。 When my husband asked me if it was worth reading, I said not really。

Dan Banana

Another very good DeMille book, an adventure in listening。 Action, intrigue, guns, boats, good and evil and some companionship。 Solid all the way through。

This was my first Nelson DeMille novel and I have to say, I loved it。 First off, the research that went into the Cuban culture and history was fascinating and made me want more。 His sense of humor throughout was amazing and I found myself laughing out loud。 I didn't want the characters' story to end, I need more Mac adventures。 Well done! Good StoryReally enjoyed the story。 Loved Mac sarcastic and snide。 Somehow Sarah character did not feel comfortable, she appeared confident but not really which i found a bit off putting like she was a pawn in it all。 However, there were moments where the story seemed to drag a bit and that explained by ratings 3。5。

Fun readNelson DeMille rarely disappoints his readers。 It's a fast paced but still solid story line。 If you?like a introduction to the author this is a good example。 Fun readNelson DeMille rarely disappoints his readers。 It's a fast paced but still solid story line。 If you?like a introduction to the author this is a good example。 。。。more

So I'm in two minds about this one。 It's a good story but overly drawn out which made me want to get it over and done with。 Not terrible enough for a 2-star rating but not great either。 So a middling 3 stars it is。 So I'm in two minds about this one。 It's a good story but overly drawn out which made me want to get it over and done with。 Not terrible enough for a 2-star rating but not great either。 So a middling 3 stars it is。 。。。more

I have thoroughly enjoyed every single book by Nelson Demille。 They are so well written, they flow so easily and are still in depth, twisty and turny, thrilling, etc。 This book delivered! Had drama, history, romance, comedy, adventure and alot of OH NO whats next!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I normally enjoy Nelson DeMille but I could not get into this one。 It could have been told in a few sentences。 A sarcastic ship captain enters into an agreement to smuggle money out of Cuba。 He is accompanied by a beautiful woman。 The money becomes the remains of American soldiers。 The mission is now to save the remains。 Surprisingly, the two main characters have sex and fall in love。 The mission fails!! The end!
